One of the most common claims that we have to deal with is theft from vans which unfortunately increases online van insurance quotes however, there are a number of steps you can take to reduce the chances of this happening to you.
1) Lock ALL your doors - One of the most recent stories we heard was a van driver stopped to get something from a petrol station, he parked in a marked bay and just nipped into the shop to pick up a paper. Upon returning to his van he found that someone had taken one of his tool boxes out of the back of his van which meant he had to attempt make a claim on his van insurance. Typically insurance companies won't pay out on this kind of theft because there was a simple measure the van driver could have taken, locking all the doors on his van. It only takes a few seconds to open a door and grab the first valuable looking box. Don't let it happen to you.
2) Don't park in alleys - We know it's not always possible to park in well lit areas but to save yourself a couple of quid in parking charges you're putting both your vehicle and all your tools at risk. Thieves are generally opportunists meaning they'll take a chance if YOU give it to them, park in car parks if possible and lock all your doors.
3) Remove all your tools - This writer tends to stick by one simple rule when deciding what to leave in a vehicle overnight. Take anything you don't want stolen with you. Simple. If you don't mind having all your tools stolen, leave them in your van overnight, chances are that you'll get away with it for months or even years, but you will get caught out eventually. I'd prefer to spend 15 minutes unloading all my gear every night and the same in the morning to know that if someone does break into my vehicle, all I have to replace is a padlock.
4) Never leave your tools in view - Yes, it's probably common sense but you wouldn't believe how common it is for people to leave screw drivers on the dash and wrenches in the footwells. It's all well and good having a "No tools are left in this van overnight" sticker but don't give a thief a reason to think that you may be lieing. If possible remove all tools from the driver compartment and get yourself a big sheet to cover the rest of your toosl in the back, that should stop casual observers from being able to see something that is worth going for.
5) Never leave your van open and unattended - Another common theft from vans if when an owner is unloading their tools into a their own house or a clients. Leaving the door open while you take your tools inside is a superb way to get your tools nicked. All it takes it 10 seconds to lock the door and then you know that your tools are safe from oppotunists who just happen to be walking past. This also applies to working on a street, just because you're 10 feet away, it doesn't mean someone won't lift something out the back of your van if it's got convenient handles.
