Concerns Over Speed Camera safety

Amid concerns over the safety of some speed cameras West Midlands police have started removing some of the cameras from the area. The measures were taken after an audit that is set to cover 6000 cameras across the country reviled that some cameras did not meet new requirements for speed cameras that were introduced in the year 2000.

Legislation brought in during 2000 outlined that cameras should be visible form up to 200 feet to stop what is known as 'panic breaking'. West Midlands police say that they understand the dangers involved in panic breaking and that poorly positioned cameras can ironically cause accidents rather than help to prevent them.

This will come as a huge relief to motorists who can expect to pay a fine and receive penalty point speeding endorsements added to their licences if caught speeding by a camera. These endorsements can then lead to an increase in your cheap van insurance policy due to the fact that you are classed as a higher risk driver than a motorist with a clean licence.

The news has also been welcomed by anti speed camera organisations who believe that cameras around the UK are solely there to create revenue and have had no effect on the safety of the UK's roads.

Wets Midlands police believe that there are may cameras in the UK that need to be removed and hope that other parts of the country will take their lead in removing unnecessary speed cameras.
