Police in London and various car insurance companies are giving warnings to drivers of a substantial increase in the theft of number plates. They are being stolen to avoid paying the congestion charge.
Since last April, around 6,500 number plates have been stolen. The police have discovered that the thieved plates are used to avoid discovery.
As well as dodging the congestion charge, the plates which are stolen are also being used to fool number plate recognition cameras designed to catch drivers without car insurance and lawbreakers.
Driver licensing authorities have also made it harder to buy plates without comprehensive documentation to prove ownership of a car with the requested plates.
Car insurance companies are saying that they have received around 14,000 reports of stolen plates and are now offering car insurance policies with special number plate screws. These screws are designed to wipe out the face of the plate if it is messed with.
Police also say that many drivers who have been caught in the congestion charge zone without having paid are now incorrectly claiming that their number plates have been stolen. This type of thing is on the increase but police are quickly routing out these false claims.
