Transits speed limited to 56mph

The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) are behind a plan to limit white van man to 56mph by fitting speed limiters into their vans. Many firms will struggle to cover the same daily mileage as they do now and this will impact their business. This new law applies to vans weighing more than 3.5 tonnes such as large Ford Transits and Mercedes Sprinters.

Many argue that the speed limit should have been set at 100 kph rather than the 90 kph as this means that van man will struggle to overtake HGVs crawling along the inside lane, this could cause major traffic problems. The Freight Transport Association had campaigned for a higher limit: 'roads can get clogged up as it takes up to four miles for one truck to overtake another'.

From 01/01/07 goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes with euro 3 diesel engines will be subject to the limit. Many believe that companies will simply downsize to under 3.5T. Van drivers have been warned that VOSA are unlikely to pardon any vans breaking the new law and that penalties will be harsh.
